A+ R A-

Want to make a difference for the planet and our local community on Earth Day?

During this time of global awareness, it might seem challenging to take time out to have an impact on the health of the world around us. The air is clearer than ever, and we should be staying home, right? Well the good news is that there is still much you can do to help support your surroundings, and we've got some ways you can help.

This year, instead of doing an in-person event, we are celebrating the Earth Day Fresno online via Facebook on April 22. We've conducted a survey of our network and found that many of them are being hurt by the impact of this pandemic. These include nonprofits and advocacy groups who fight tirelessly for our environmental concerns. So we've decided to show them some love on Earth Day, sharing a bit about each organization all day long and highlighting their causes, and current needs under this pandemic.

We'll also share fun ways to support the environment while you're sheltering at home! We usually celebrate Earth Day as a fun, free, volunteer-run, all-ages event in the park, so we thought it would be nice to share some fun earth-friendly activities throughout the day too.

Stay tuned for more info in the coming days about what we've got planned. In the meantime, we have gathered some of the ways you can celebrate Earth Day in Fresno this year.

This Earth Day, stand in solidarity with our local community, our local natural spaces and ecosystems, and the great network of organizations and local businesses who work for a healthier planet every day!

Making a Difference From Home This Earth Day

Here are some ways YOU can make a difference this Earth Day 2020 in Fresno:

  1. Donate to local environmental businesses and nonprofits impacted by the pandemic. The organizations and businesses who usually participate in Earth Day Fresno make a difference for Mother Earth through their work every day, and many of them need support right now because of COVID-19. Go to our Earth Day Fresno Network Support Drive page to find out how you can purchase their great products and services online and support them with financial donations. They offer an array of great online activities (like online yoga classes!) and goodies (like artisan chocolate!).
  2. Find time to appreciate our beautiful local natural spaces. Learn about our local natural resources and ecosystems that sustain us -- right in your backyard or on a walk! If you and your family want an extra fun challenge, and to learn about the plants and animals you’re seeing, download a bird or plant identification app like Audubon Bird Guide, or PlantSnapp
  3. Attend one of the many virtual Earth Day events being held virtually on Wednesday, April 22!
    1. Join Fresno State’s Sustainability Club at their free Digital Earth Day event on Zoom, from 12pm-2pm. For more information and to register, click here.
    2. Join Citizens’ Climate Lobby for their virtual Earth Day event “Uniting From Home,” from 10am-12pm. For more information and to register, click here.
    3. The Earth Day Film Fest, featuring films from across the world, begins streaming at 6pm.
    4. The screening of The Condor and the Eagle, streaming online at 6pm
